THE LEGEND OF ALDE GOTT
Wherever you are in Sasbachwalden, you’re likely to run into the ‘Alde Gott’ (old God), as this is the name of the town’s vineyard and, of course, the winemaking cooperative. The event venue and a few guest houses also feature Alde Gott in their name, whilst the Alde Gott panoramic trail is wonderful for hiking.
And it’s all based on an age-old legend from the time of the Thirty Years’ War, when much of the region was uninhabited. A young man was passing through the area now known as Sasbachwalden. He was on his own and lonely. But then he happened upon a young woman and called out in relief: ‘Der alde Gott lebt noch!’ (The old God still exists!)
